Overview

Cartalax is a three-amino-acid peptide, Ala-Glu-Asp, abbreviated AED and coded "T-31 peptide" in the older Russian papers. The US National Library of Medicine holds a substance record for it as alanyl-glutamyl-aspartic acid, describing it as a synthetic peptide with geroprotective activity — a description that says nothing about joints.

The name promises cartilage. The literature delivers skin, kidney and stem cells. That mismatch is the most useful thing to know about this compound.

Mechanism of action

AED is studied as an epigenetic actor, not a receptor ligand. In ageing skin fibroblast cultures it suppressed MMP-9 synthesis, raised the proliferation marker Ki-67 and CD98hc, and — with the tetrapeptide AEDG — damped caspase-dependent apoptosis ( Lin'kova et al., Bull Exp Biol Med 2016). Similar marker shifts were reported in kidney tissue cultures ( Bull Exp Biol Med 2015) and in ageing mesenchymal stem cell cultures ( Mol Biol Rep 2020). All three are dish experiments comparing marker intensity, not measurements of tissue function.

Indications and use context

Osteoarthritis, meniscal injury and cartilage repair are not indications for this peptide anywhere, nor endpoints in any study of it. Weighing it against physiotherapy, load management or intra-articular injection compares a marketing category with a clinical one.

AED does not appear as a listed substance on the WADA Prohibited List.

The list names substances someone examined, so an omission mostly signals that nobody examined this one. S0 still captures unapproved pharmacological agents in general; tested athletes should verify status with their governing body.

Safety and side effects

Cell-culture papers do not generate safety data, and cell-culture papers are all there is: no animal toxicology, no human tolerability report, no adverse-event series under any of this compound's names.

Pharmacology and dosing considerations

Published concentrations are picomolar-to-nanomolar amounts added to culture medium and cannot be converted into a dose for an intact organism. No human pharmacokinetics exist, so this page describes no regimen.

Formulations and combinations

Supplied as a lyophilised powder, shelved beside the rest of the organ-named line. Oral "cartilage complex" products sold under similar names are animal-tissue extracts, not the AED tripeptide described here.

Searching the National Library of Medicine's chemical name returns roughly six to ten records, dominated by one collaboration and split between Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine and Advances in Gerontology, several in Russian only. The design is always the same: add peptide to a culture, stain for markers, compare with untreated wells. No independent laboratory has reproduced the results, and no study of any design has examined chondrocytes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there human evidence that Cartalax helps joints? None at all — no trial, no case series, not even an uncontrolled report. The cartilage association comes from the product name and the group's organ-matching theory.

What does "peptide bioregulator" actually mean? It is the St. Petersburg school's label for short peptides they propose bind DNA directly and re-activate genes silenced by ageing — one network's hypothesis, not a recognised drug class.

How does Cartalax differ from Epitalon? By one amino acid. Cartalax is Ala-Glu-Asp; Epitalon is Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, the same three residues with glycine added. The two were tested side by side in the fibroblast study above and behaved similarly — which is awkward for a theory that assigns each peptide a different organ.

Is it a licensed medicine? No. Having a National Library of Medicine chemical record confers no approval; that catalogue simply indexes substances appearing in published papers.
