Bacteriostatic water (often shortened to "BAC water") is a diluent, not an active drug or peptide. Its purpose is to dissolve powdered medications so they can be drawn up. It has no therapeutic effect of its own.

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol (commonly around 0.9%) added as a preservative. It is a pharmaceutical-grade fluid used to reconstitute lyophilized (freeze-dried) powders — including many research peptides — into a liquid that can be measured and injected.
Role as a reconstitution diluent
Many peptides and injectable drugs are shipped as a dry powder because they are more stable that way. Before use, the powder must be dissolved in a liquid. Bacteriostatic water is one of the standard choices for this because:
- It dissolves water-soluble powders into a uniform solution.
- The added preservative is intended to inhibit bacterial growth, so a single vial can be entered with a needle more than once.
- This makes it suited to multi-dose vials that are drawn from repeatedly over a period of days or weeks.
The "benefit," properly framed, is convenience and preservation for multi-draw use — not any physiological action.
The bacteriostatic preservative
The word "bacteriostatic" refers to the benzyl alcohol, which slows the proliferation of bacteria that might be introduced during repeated needle entries. This is why it is favored over plain sterile water when a container will be accessed multiple times. It does not sterilize a contaminated solution and does not replace careful aseptic technique.
How it differs from sterile water
Sterile water for injection contains no preservative and is generally intended for single use, after which any remainder is discarded. The key practical distinctions are:

Bacteriostatic water is a diluent, so its usefulness depends entirely on correct handling, storage, and the requirements of whatever it is used to reconstitute.
