Benzyl alcohol precautions

The benzyl alcohol that makes the water "bacteriostatic" is also the source of its most important documented cautions:

  • Benzyl alcohol is specifically contraindicated in newborns and infants, where it has been associated with serious toxicity.
  • Large-volume administration can deliver enough benzyl alcohol to be a concern, so it is intended for small-volume reconstitution rather than as a large-volume fluid.
  • Labeling flags use in pregnancy and in people with known benzyl alcohol sensitivity as situations warranting professional guidance.

Allergy and local reactions

As with any injectable, a person can react to a component. Considerations include:

  • Possible hypersensitivity or allergy to benzyl alcohol.
  • Local irritation, stinging, or discomfort at an injection site.
  • Reactions that are actually attributable to the reconstituted drug rather than the diluent itself.

Sterility and technique
