Overview

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing a small amount of benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which allows a vial to be entered more than once. It does not have a dose of its own — its job is to dissolve a dry peptide so it can be measured and drawn as a liquid.

How it is used to reconstitute

Reconstitution means turning freeze-dried powder back into a solution:

  • The water is added slowly against the vial wall to gently dissolve the powder without foaming.
  • Common reconstitution volumes are on the order of 1–3 mL per vial, chosen to make the resulting concentration easy to measure — this is a convenience choice, not a fixed rule.
  • The water does not change the amount of peptide present; it only determines how that fixed amount is spread across a volume.

Why the volume you choose matters

The key idea is an inverse relationship between diluent volume and concentration:

  • A fixed amount of powder in more water gives a lower concentration (mg/mL).
  • The same amount in less water gives a higher concentration.

Storage and oversight

Because it contains a preservative for multiple entries, labels typically specify a discard window after first entry, and the reconstituted peptide may need refrigeration.
